Silverbacks and Smoke Eaters meet for the second time this season.

The Silverbacks and Trail Smoke Eaters will meet for the second time this season tonight (Wednesday, October 22) at 7:30 pm as the ‘Backs make their second trip to Trail this season. The Silverbacks won the opener of the season series, 4-2 at the Cominco Arena on Saturday, September 27.

Taro Hirose and Shane Danyluk opened the scoring in the first and second periods to give the ‘Backs a two-nothing lead before Jake Lucchini and Dallas Calvin tied the game for the home team in the middle period. Nick Hutchison restored the Silverbacks’ lead late in the second frame and Hirose added the insurance marker late in the third.

Tonight’s game is the first of back-to-back games between the two teams as The Smoke Eaters will visit the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm on Friday night, October 24 at 7 pm.

The Smoke Eaters have won their last two games and are playing tonight for just the second time in ten days as Kienan Scott scored the winner in overtime as Trail got by Langley at home on Saturday. The Smoke Eaters won 7-4 in Surrey on Sunday, October 12, after splitting games earlier on the weekend in Powell River and Alberni Valley.

The Silverbacks are coming off of their fifth win of the season on Sunday afternoon, 4-2 at home over the Langley Rivermen. The Backs improved to 2-and-1 versus Mainland Division opponents this season after opening with a 4-2 victory over the Rivermen at the Bauer BCHL Showcase last month in Chilliwack, and losing 3-2 in Surrey in overtime two Wednesday’s ago.

Ross Heidt made his Backs debut last weekend and scored in his first game.

Charlie Zuccarini of The Smoke Eaters is tied for fifth in BCHL scoring with eight goals and eight assists for 16 points in nine games, as well as Jake Lucchini is tied for sixth with six goals and nine assists for 15 points in nine games.

Andrew Farny and Carson Bolduc lead the Backs in scoring. Farny has five goals and seven assists for 12 points in 11 games while Bolduc now has five goals along with five assists for 10 points in 11 games.

The Silverbacks are 2-3-0-1 versus the Interior Division this season, and 2-2-0-0 on the road in the Interior with one of their wins coming in Trail last month and 4-2-0-1 away from the Shaw Centre overall. Meanwhile, the Smoke Eaters are 0-2-0-0 against divisional opponents as Trail lost to both the Vees and Silverbacks last month, the only two divisional games that the Smoke Eaters have played thus far. Trail is 3-2-0-0 overall at home this season.

The Backs now have five wins and four losses along with two overtime losses for 12 points in 11 games. The Silverbacks are tied for fourth in the Interior Division with the Smoke Eaters who have two games in hand. Trail has six wins and three losses in nine games. The Vernon Vipers are one point ahead in third place, while the Merritt Centennials are two points ahead, alone in second, and the Penticton Vees lead the division with 20 points in 11 games. The West Kelowna Warriors have lost their last four games and are in fifth place in the Interior but, with 11 points are just one back of the Silverbacks and Smoke Eaters.

The Backs will finish their weekend this Sunday afternoon, at home to the Penticton Vees at 3 pm. at The Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm.
