Pre-season response in the Okanagan.

The Silverbacks went into West Kelowna last night (Saturday) and responded with a 3-1 pre-season win over the Warriors, 24 hours after the Warriors came into the Shaw Centre and won 10-3 over the ‘Backs on Friday night in Salmon Arm.

The Warriors opened the scoring for the second time in as many nights at 10:29 of the first period.

With under three minutes remaining in the opening frame, 20-year-old ‘Backs forward Matty Saharchuk found the back of the net with 17-year-old Marcus Mitchell earning the assist at 17:36.

The Silverbacks outshot the Warriors 22-11 in the first period with the score tied 1-1.

18-year-old Jared Turcotte gave the ‘Backs their first lead of the weekend, a power-play goal from Brett Stewart and Saharchuk at 2:21 of the middle period.

The first scrap of the game came 6:27 into the period, Saharchuk got mixed up with Rylan Yaremko.

Stewart and Garrett Forrester later dropped their gloves with 5:52 remaining in the game.

The visitor’s took a 2-1 lead into the final frame, with the Silverbacks outshooting the Warriors 28-7 in the second frame.

20-year-old returnee Colton Thibault potted the only goal in the third, and 19-year-old second season defenseman Damian Chreck picked up the assist at 13:19.

The Warriors outshot the Silverbacks 12-11 in the third but, the ‘Backs finished the game ahead 50-41.

20-year-old Angus Redmond started his second pre-season game and won for the second consecutive Saturday, and stopping 40 of 41 shots including a handful of glove and diving saves.

The ‘Backs scored the only power-play goal in the game, and finished 1-for-6 with the man-advantage while the PK was a perfect 5-for-5.

The Silverbacks finish exhibition play with a record of 3-and-2, while the Warriors went 3-and-3. The two teams will meet again on Friday, October 16th at West Kelowna in a 7p.m. start.

Practice will resume this week at the Shaw Centre with just over 20 players.

The first Silverbacks regular season game of this 2015-16 campaign is set for Friday night, September 11th at the Shaw Centre at 7p.m. versus the Penticton Vees. The ‘Backs second regular season game isn’t until Tuesday, September 8th when they will travel to Merritt to meet the Centennials at 7p.m. at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.
