The Silverbacks are back in action tonight, set for BCHL regular season game 2 as they travel to Merritt to meet the Centennials at 7p.m.
The ‘Backs haven’t played since opening this season with a 4-2 victory at home over the defending BCHL champion Penticton Vees, this past Friday night on September 11th at the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm.
Elijiah Barriga of West Covina, California scored the first 2 goals for the home team while Josh Blanchard and Ross Heidt also found the back of the net. Angus Remond stopped 33 of 35 shots in the win.
The Centennials opened the season by losing 6-4 to the Warriors at West Kelowna on opening night. The Cents gave up a 3-1 lead in the first period and were outshot 41-20 overall. Merritt finished 1-for-5 with the man-advantage and 1-for-4 on the PK.
The Centennials scored the final 3 goals on Saturday night to win 5-4 at home over the Warriors. Merritt’s power-play finished 1-for-2 and the Cents potted a short-handed marker courtesy of Gavin Gould while Colin Grannary scored on a penalty shot, Merritt’s PK was 4-for-5. The Warriors outshot the Centennials 35-22.
5 of the 6 teams in the Interior Division have 2 points after opening weekend, with Penticton 0-1.
The Centennials have 10 returnees from last season’s team which finished with a regular season record of 32-24-0-2 for third in the Interior Divison and 66 points tied with West Kelowna for the final two playoff spots, 1 point ahead of the Silverbacks. Joe Martin is now the head coach of the Cents, after four years as an assistant in Merritt. Martin has taken over for Luke Pierce who was hired in the off-season to be the head coach with the Kootenay Ice in the WHL in Cranbrook.

Tonight is the first of 6 regular season matchup’s, as the Silverbacks will host the Centennials on Wednesday night, October 7th at 7p.m. at the Shaw Centre.
The ‘Backs host the Coquitlam Express this coming Saturday night, September 19th at 7p.m. at the Shaw Centre before hosting the Chilliwack Chiefs on Sunday afternoon, September 20th at 3p.m. in Salmon Arm.
The only other game on the schedule tonight, has the Trail Smoke Eaters in West Kelowna.
